Criss Crossed

Hertz and Brian, two strangers became friends while crossing the English channel in a cruise to France. One was traveling for business, other was taking off from business. A perfect junction to meet. Coffee at breakfast graduated to Wine over dinner. Six days of sailing seemed only six minute long. The day of seventh arrived. Hertz and Brian were to say bye to each other. They lingered till they came to the dock. Smiling and laughing as if it was one of those 6 days in ship, continuing the sail. Brian walked her to the taxi stand, cold and silent as if they never met. He took the cab door for her. She gave him the last hug she could, when he whispered in her ears -

'Hertz, I know we would never meet But I wanted you to know that am glad to have met you and sailing back by myself would be difficult. And I don't think we will be able to meet in Calais. So I am bidding you good bye and wishing you a shining star"

She "I know. But aren't you going to be hanging around in Calais for few days, taking your vacation?"

Brian"No, actually I sail back tonight in a private Cruise in the same ship. I have a wedding to attend"

Hertz "Oh, won't you be staying back to see this beautiful place after coming so far"

Brian "Actually NO. I have been here earlier. I came to take my bride. She belongs to Calais. I sail back to London tonight with my wife. She agreed to marry me last year, only if we got married on a cruise today"

Hertz felt a sharp but sturdy pin smoothing through her auricle..she was numb for few secs...she gathered herself to smile, and wishes him "All the best. I wish I could come, only if I did not have to attend the funeral today"

Brian "No don't bother". Hertz never understood his cold remark, so did not pay attention this time either.

6hrs later :

At the funeral "May the soul of Mary leave the coast of Calais in peace where her family resides. Amen (Mary 12thFeb 1908-20th May 1938)".

The Cruise that left for London on 23rd May 1938 said
"Mary weds Brian"

I was expecting something like this, actually. Good one actually, but you could have increased the dramatic effect a little bit.
