The first time I came to know the existence of the 'eggs' was in 1988 in our biology class. The next time I got a glimpse of the actual tortures of the 'egg' was when my mom got her hysterectomy done in 1999 !
I had never seen her so sensitive and so emotional.
She would cry at the drop of a hat and feel bad at anything we said.
Our family Dr. told us to be patient, remain quiet and just let the phase pass since she was apparently responding to hormonal fluctuations in her body.
"Hormonal Fluctuations" !!!
What's that, was my first response. Followed by 'Oh come on, these are justifications for her to do whatever she wants'! I was SO wrong. I came to this conclusion only after a year passed and she came back to her own self. Yes, ONE YEAR!
I am not exaggerating but that one year our house atmosphere was quite volatile. Am glad that we all survived. Thanks to Science and Medical Science for it.
It was in 1999 that I started actually started reading about the biological, physical and emotional effects of Estrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone on our body. The Trio - PET! There is a whole field of science called 'Endocrinology' dedicated to their biological and physical effects. It does touch upon their emotional effects too but then it moves on to 'Psychology' or may be an interesting cocktail to Psychology, Biology and Endocrinology with some help from Mathematics ! Role and influence of the later is quite trivial compared to what the PET does or can do to you. If I was to introduce religion again, I would start with Three Biological Gods - Progesterone, Estrogen and Testosterone instead of Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwar !
We are what we are, men or women, because of the unique combination of PET right from when we are conceived to till we die. And it is an ever evolving journey as your body ages under different environmental (hormonal, emotional, physical, technical, biological, etc) situation.
One has to put real efforts to understand the role of these hormones. If you are a novice and unaware about the strength or the mechanism of your own body or the influence of these hormones you will end up blaming yourself or others around you for your own biological constitution (in particular for Men) and fluctuation (specifically for Women).
It was only day before yesterday, when I was talking to some friends (guys and gals) when I realized how important it is for a man and women to understand each others biology to be able to understand each other. I mean it would definitely help to decipher each other to some extent better with some aid from an understanding of PET than without. PET are the sole reasons I believe to explain the claim that men are from Mars and Women from Venus. When in reality they are not so different except their hormonal composition!
Ok, so back to my what I wanted to write.
Well, I have been thinking about writing about this issue for long. I am not the first one to talk or write about it either. But ever since I developed a hormonal understanding of life, my life became more simple, easy and less stressful. I became a happier and easy going person than what I was! I became less hard on myself and on others too.
It led to realize how complicated our own body is and a miracle in itself, specially a woman's. It's a self managed factory with its own unique conditioning that only we, ourselves, can hope to gather some understanding. I think having a complete understanding of yourself, your mind, body and soul is next to impossible. But within the impossibility whatever one gathers to gage is better than nothing. Alteast it has helped me immensely and I think understanding oneself starts from there. The more we understand ourself the more we are capable of understanding others. Knowing about your own self, as a man or women, is the our first responsibility towards ourselves.
I am starting to write to about the journey of the 'egg' from birth to death and how it affects us, with a hope that it will help me, as a human, a woman, to understand the other. I am not writing it as a justification for women to explain their mood swings or for men in hope for understanding their women. It's a plain simple write up what I think happens to our body, its physical and emotional consequences that I witnessed myself or in others. It is the journey that I want to remember and remind myself as I meet newer people in my life. And I hope someday, the hormonal view of life that I have developed help me and others to lead a peaceful life in future.
All my readers here, are welcome to write and share their experiences if they want to. I would only request them to be as honest as possible in their experiences on the influence of 'the egg.'
As a human, I think it's very important for us to know ourselves. I don't know how a man's mind works hence cannot tell or write anything about them. I wish I had a male reader who could give me his honest view on life or his journey of understanding himself and souls around him. But as of now this is a good start. I will writing from henceforth under this 'label' about my experiences and understanding of my own biology and science.
As a man, I think it's very important to know about some basic facts about the women you care about. And as a women, its your responsibility to be able to understand everybody around you, as I think, a woman (a mother, a sister, a wife, a daughter) is the pillar of a family, a house. And with little help and understanding from their better half, (the father, the husband, the brother, the son) you can build an unbeatable and unconquered palace of peace and harmony.
God Bless.
NB - I think it was the friend, who told, why don't you women maintain a journal of your own, an honest one possibly, for us to understand you gals better.
I don't know if maintaining such a journal is possible but if one really wants to have a broad understanding of each gender then there are plenty of scientific reports, documents and books towards the same. It was definitely a well apprecaited gesture, though at the same time I think that the basic kindness and humanity should not be compromised behind the walls of science. One should also keep in mind, that each human being is unique and different. One has to have an understanding of that uniqueness to be able to understand each other the best. The journals, the documents, the papers can only give you a general idea but they are not the only possible explanation!

You are completely right, I came to that understanding too. Part of our behavior is due to hormonal input. Every single neurotransmitter action is controlled partially by hormones, that explains the mood swings in different parts of our menstrual cycle... Our aggressiveness is controlled by testosterone, our feeling of "being in love" by endorphins, our feeling of dependence by dopamine (the last 2 compound are not hormones, but still their chemicals!!)... I would have a fight with Ana if I told you that every human reaction is controlled rather by hormones or by neurotransmitters... by the shape of your brain convolutions... but it is a simplification that does not allow any space for spirituality, or does it?... Let's have a dinner on the issue, we could be all night long talking about this!
Suggestion on a book: Oliver Sacks - The man that mistook his wife for a hat.
Nice post!
big hug

WOW... HORMONES FOR EACH ACTION AND FEELING...!!!!!!
F)*#)@*#)(@*#{@(
I had not read enough to get there yet.. I just knew the role of testosterone and estrogen..
BUT THIS IS AMAZING...
And offcourse among all this trying make space for spirituality seems challenging on the surface at least..
BUT THIS IS AWESOME. Thanks for telling me about the book.. am going to get it..
lol.. fight with me? na... I would only say that these changes in hormones (yes, there are tons of them controlling all these crazy emotions) do not happen "out of the blue", but rather they are partly triggered by our environment. What you eat, how things are going for you, etc also affects the fluctuations of your hormones. Just an example - (most of us) do not feel the same cramps, with the same intensity all and every month. Some are harder than others. So... just think what happen? What makes them different? The hormones involved in the cycle are the same; but sometimes the environment (e.g., things are doing good in your job, w your life) that changes the intensity of those hormonal cycles. Makes sense??
I liked your approach, Tanu. Changes in hormones are not to be used as excuse (as my brother says: "those are mainly excuses to eat chocolate" hahah), but they do play a role, a big role in our mood. So it is nice to have awareness of what is happening with our body.
I could go on and on and on... love this topic. Thanks for giving us some space to talk about it! ;o)
@Ana - u bet...
And am as passionately as u, in love with this topic than ever. can go on and on and on ...
but its nice to have some understanding of our body and brain ...
