:) .....and so came back the word 'Didi' on a more regular basis...than it used to be !
The credit goes to my new roommate from India for the next school year. She is 17, technically a kid, even younger than my youngest cousin 'Rony'
None other than my Brother, Rony and Puchi call me 'Didi'. Ever since I came to US its only my brother who calls me so more frequently than them, since they can't afford to call me everyday ! Besides they call me just 'Di'
It's been a while actually that I have heard this word..I think the last time I used to address anybody or call anybody was 10 - 12 years back when I moved out of West Bengal. I think its the Bong culture, more specifically, Kolkata culture. You address anybody elder to you as 'Didi' , 'Bhaiya' or 'Dada' !
I think there is a sweetness, a respect, an affection and something different associated with those words. I myself had difficulty in calling people by name when I first moved to the west (Dehradun)! I gained and lost something by learning to call people by 'name' :)
I got rid of the extra weight :)
I got more casual with people
I became more professional in dealing with people
I got rid of unwanted emotions that those four words carry :)
I valued the right use of those words
I learned to quantify my emotions :)
I became more 'practical'
Out put - I only had my bro and cousins calling me 'Di' and never called anybody as 'Di' or 'Bhaiya' ever after that since am the 'eldest' in the entire 'Bakwaas' lineage :)
But yesterday when my 17 year old, asked me so many questions I felt I was at home :)
All of a sudden there was a sweetness, a difference, a change, a reminder to a lost word. I felt the same flavor in those words that I used to have. And I think I liked it. Hopefully my stay with the '17 year old' will be fun and enjoyable...
As of now am deriving pleasure from those four words :) ....it does not feel the same though..but its nice to hear it again..Thankyou god :)
NB- and yes, my deep breathing did not have to be used at all, I did not get irritated at all at the sight of the chipku :)
